Supplementary and Subject Matter Authorizations

Supplementary Authorizations (SA) and Subject Matter Authorizations (SMA) allow individuals to add additional content areas to a Multiple or Single Subject credential. This will allow individuals to teach additional subjects beyond their primary credential content area.

Please note: CSU San Marcos is only able to include supplementary and/or subject matter authorizations during the recommendation process for an initial credential. If you currently possess a preliminary or clear credential from the CTC and wish to add a supplementary and/or subject matter authorization, you will need to apply directly to the CTC.

Supplementary Authorizations for Multiple Subject Credential

If an individual is requesting a recommendation for a Multiple Subject credential they may include a Supplementary Authorization with that credential (or multiple supplementary authorizations, if requirements are met) . The Supplementary Authorization will authorize the credential holder to teach that subject for grades 9 and below. Detailed below are the requirements that must be satisfied to obtain a Supplementary Authorization - applicants must satisfy one of the following requirements:

  • Transcripts
    • Official transcripts showing the completion of either 20 semester units (or 10 upper-division semester units) of non-remedial course work in the subject, completed at a regionally accredited community college, college, or university.
        • 20 semester units are required if a combination of upper- and lower-division units are completed.
        • At least one course in each of the specified areas listed.
        • The balance of the 10 or 20 units may be in any course within the subject category.
        • A grade of 鈥淐鈥 or higher is required in every course used to meet this requirement.

    Unacceptable coursework includes:

      • Coursework that is not applicable toward a bachelor鈥檚 degree or higher degree (remedial).
      • Professional development or continuing education units.
      • In-service training or workshops.
      • Education and education methodology coursework unless a letter is provided by the chair of the subject area department stating that the course is equivalent to one offered by that department.
      • Coursework from a department other than the supplementary authorization being sought unless a letter is provided from the chair of the subject area department stating that the course is equivalent to one offered by that department.
  • Degree
    • A collegiate major from a regionally-accredited college or university in a subject directly related to the subject to be listed.

Supplementary Authorizations for Single Subject Credential

If an individual is requesting a recommendation for a Single Subject credential they may include a Supplementary Authorization with that credential (or more than one supplementary authorization, if requirements are met). There are two types of Supplementary Authorization that can be included with a Single Subject Credential:

Introductory Subjects Supplementary Authorizations

An Introductory Subjects Supplementary Authorization will authorize the Single Subject credential holder to teach that additional subject for grades 9 and below to students in preschool, kindergarten, grades 1鈥12, or in classes organized primarily for adults. Introductory Supplementary Authorizations are available in the following content areas:

  • Introductory Subjects Supplementary Authorization Content Areas
    • Introductory Agriculture:
      • Animal science, plant science, and agricultural mechanics.
    • Introductory Art:
      • Drawing and painting, art history or appreciation, and crafts.
    • Introductory Business:
      • Business management, business marketing or introduction to business, computer concepts and applications, economics, business communications or business English, and accounting.
    • Introductory Computer Science:
      • Computational thinking, computing practice and programming, computers and communication devices, and impacts of computing (e.g., social, ethical, legal) 鈥 impacts of computing topics may be included within courses that cover any of the other content areas.
    • Introductory Dance:
      • Jazz dance, contemporary dance, and dance theory.
    • Introductory English:
      • Composition, literature, and grammar or language structure.
    • Introductory Language Other Than English (Specify):
      • Grammar, composition, conversation, and literature, plus oral language proficiency. Information on verifying the oral language  requirement may be found below.
    • Introductory Health Science:
      • Substance abuse (including alcohol, drug, and tobacco); family life education (including human sexuality, HIV/AIDS, and sexually transmitted diseases); nutrition; comprehensive school health systems or programs; and health education theory, behavior, or foundations.
    • Introductory Home Economics:
      • Food and nutrition, clothing, child development, and family life and parenting (Course of study must include course work in both food and nutrition, but the areas may be covered with one course; the same is true for the family life and parenting area; at least one course must include a laboratory component).
    • Introductory Industrial Arts:
      • Drafting or graphic arts, woods or metals, and electricity or electronics.
    • Introductory Mathematics:
      • College algebra, geometry, and development of the real number system or introduction to mathematics; or three courses in calculus or other mathematics courses for which intermediate algebra and geometry are prerequisites.
    • Introductory Music:
      • Vocal music, instrumental music, music history or appreciation, and music theory
    • Introductory Physical Education:
      • Team sports and games; fundamental and creative movement skills (such as gymnastics); human movement, motor development, and/or motor learning; and individual, dual, nontraditional, and global sports and games (such as aquatics, conditioning, and archery).
    • Introductory Science:
      • Biological sciences, chemistry, geosciences, and physics (The course work must include a one-year sequence of courses in at least two of the listed subject areas, and at least one course must include a laboratory component).
    • Introductory Social Science:
      • United States history, California history, world history, geography, and United States government.
    • Introductory Theater:
      • Acting, directing and stagecraft.

Specific Subjects Supplementary Authorizations

A Specific Subjects Supplementary Authorization will authorize the Single Subject credential holder to teach that additional subject at any grade level. Specific Subjects Supplementary Authorizations are available in the following content areas:

    Biological Sciences: Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biology of Organisms, and Evolution.
    Chemistry: Structure and Stability, and Chemical Reactions.
    Geosciences: Astronomy, Geology, Meteorology, and Oceanography.
    Physics: Energy-Mechanics, Energy-Heat, Energy-Electricity & Magnetism, Wave Motion, and Atomic & Nuclear Physics.

    Note [3]: Subjects marked must include a laboratory component.

    Note [4]: The specific subject Computer Science must include the following components: computer programming, data structures and algorithms, digital devices, systems and networks, software design, and impacts of computing (e.g., social, ethical, legal) 鈥 impacts of computing topics may be included within courses that cover any of the other content areas.

    Note [5]: Family Life Education, including Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Use Prevention (Health Science), must include the following components: Sexually Transmitted Diseases including HIV/AIDS, Human Development and Human Sexuality, Parenting Education, Violence Prevention, and Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Use, Prevention, and Cessation.


Detailed below are the requirements that must be satisfied to obtain a Supplementary Authorization - applicants must satisfy one of the following requirements:

Subject Matter Authorizations

Introductory Subject Matter Authorizations

From the CTC: "An Introductory Subject Matter Authorization authorizes the holder to teach the subject matter content typically included in curriculum guidelines and textbooks approved for study in grades 9 and below. This allows an employer to assign a teacher with an Introductory Subject Matter Authorization to teach a class in which the curriculum is for grades 9 and below but the students in the class may be in grades K-12."

  • Introductory Subject Matter Authorization Content Areas
    • Art: must include coursework in the content areas of art history including aesthetics and appreciation, two dimensional art including drawing, painting, and printmaking, three-dimensional art including sculpture and ceramics, and photography/computer generated imagery.

    • Dance: must include coursework in the content areas of jazz dance, contemporary dance, and dance theory.

    • English: must include coursework in the content areas of grammar or language structure, advanced composition, speech, and literature.

    • A Language Other Than English (specify): must include coursework in the content areas of grammar, composition, culture, conversation, and literature.

    • Mathematics: must include coursework in the content areas of algebra, advanced algebra, geometry, probability or statistics, and development of the real number system or introduction to mathematics.

    • Music: must include coursework in the content areas of vocal music including the analysis of repertoire and literature appreciation for developing musicians, instrumental music including the analysis of repertoire and literature appreciation for developing musicians, aural musicianship, keyboard, music history including music appreciation, world music, conducting and music theory.

    • Science: must include coursework in the content areas of biological sciences, chemistry, geosciences, and physics.

    • Social Science: must include coursework in the content areas of United States history, California history, world history, world civilization or world cultures, physical geography, and United States government.

    • Theater: must include coursework in the content areas of acting, directing and stagecraft.

Detailed below are the requirements that must be satisfied to obtain an Introductory Subject Matter Authorization - applicants must satisfy one of the following requirements:

  • Transcripts
    • Official Transcripts showing the completion of 32 semester units (48 quarter units) of non-remedial coursework in the subject, including a minimum of three semester or four quarter units of coursework in each content area. The balance of the units may be in any course within the subject category. (Exception: the subject of Science requires at least six semester or eight quarter units in each of the four science content areas [biological sciences, chemistry, geosciences, and physics])
  • Degree
    • A degree major from a regionally-accredited college or university in a subject directly related to the subject to be listed on the credential.

Specific Subject Matter Authorizations

From the CTC: "A Specific Subject Matter Authorization authorizes the holder to teach the specific subject in grades preschool, K-12, and classes organized primarily for adults."

    • Official Transcripts showing the completion 32 semester units (48 quarter units) of non-remedial coursework (Exception: the subject of History requires a minimum of 16 semester units in both world history and U.S. history).
  • Degree
    • A degree major from a regionally-accredited college or university in a subject directly related to the subject to be listed on the credential.
