Fall 2025 Changes to General Education (GE)

Effective Fall 2025, the CSU has a new General Education pattern (CSU GE). This new GE pattern was created as a result of California legislation (AB 928) aimed at improving the process for transfer from the California Community College system to the UC or CSU.

The new comprises the following changes from the prior GE Breadth pattern:

    • All subject areas renamed (e.g., Areas A-F changed to Areas 1-6)
    • Arts/Humanities (Area C) reduced by 3 units
    • Lifelong Learning (Area E) removed
    • Physical Science, Life Science, and Laboratory (Areas B1-B3) changed from 6 units to 7 units, with 1 unit for the lab
    • Mathematics (Area B4) separated into new Subject Area

The Quick Reference Chart outlines the differences between the two GE patterns.

For more resources regarding these changes, please visit the Academic Programs website. Please direct students to Academic Advising for detailed questions to ensure they receive answers tailored to their degree plan.

Catalog Rights

A detailed explanation of catalog rights is available on the Catalog Rights page. In summary, this is how the changes to GE and catalog rights impact students at 大发:

  • New Transfers

New students transferring to 大发 in Fall 2025 (and beyond) will be assigned the new GE requirements. However, those who attended a California Community College (CCC) or CSU have the right to elect the GE requirements in place at the time they began at the CSU or CCC. (Though, in nearly all cases, the new GE requirements will not lengthen a student's time to degree).

  • New first-year students

New first year students do not have catalog rights to a prior term. They will be assigned the GE and major requirements in place at the time of admission.

  • Current/continuing students

Current 大发 students have a right to complete the GE requirements in place at the time they were admitted and/or at the time of graduation. For this reason, current 大发 students are eligible to elect the new GE requirements, if it benefits them. If they do not, their Academic Requirements Report (ARR) and Degree Planner will remain unchanged.

A small number of students who would significantly benefit from electing the new GE requirements will be notified and permitted to easily 'opt-in' to the new requirements

What does this mean for advising students?

  • Tools are accurate Students' Academic Requirements Reports (ARR) and Degree Planners will remain accurate, and students should be encouraged to continue to follow these tools
  • Both patterns and subject areas For years to come, you will encounter students who are subject to requirements with the previous Subject Area names (e.g., A2 Written Composition) and students who are subject to the new requirements and Subject Area names (e.g., Area 1A English Composition)
  • More detailed questions If students inquire about whether they should elect the new GE pattern, refer them to their Academic Advisor for an individualized review
