CSU GE Requirements

General Education Coursework

Effective Fall 2025 and subsequent catalog years, each student must complete forty-three (43) units of coursework from the following subject area distribution in order to satisfy the General Education (GE) requirements for a baccalaureate degree. 

Lower-Division General Education (34 units)

Subject Area 1: English Communication (9 units)
  • 1A: English Composition
  • 1B: Critical Thinking
  • 1C: Oral Communication
Subject Area 2: Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning (3 units)
  • 2: Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning
Subject Area 3: Arts and Humanities (6 units)
  • 3A: Arts
  • 3B: Humanities
Subject Area 4: Social and Behavioral Sciences (6 units)
  • 4H: United States History
  • 4C/4G: United States Constitution and California Government
Subject Area 5: Physical and Biological Sciences (7 units)
  • 5A: Physical Science
  • 5B: Biological Science
  • 5C: Laboratory
Subject Area 6:  Ethnic Studies (3 units)
  • 6: Ethnic Studies

Upper-Division General Education (9 units)

  • UD25: Upper-Division Mathematical Concepts/Quantitative Reasoning or Physical/Biological Science
  • UD3: Upper-Division Arts or Humanities
  • UD4: Upper-Division Social and Behavioral Sciences
