Pregnant and Parenting Student Rights

It's crucial for pregnant and/or parenting students to have a comprehensive understanding of their rights and access to the various campus resources that can offer support during challenging times. Title IX, a federal civil rights law, is a valuable resource that not only provides information about your rights related to pregnancy and parenting but also offers advocacy and support services to ensure that you receive fair treatment and opportunities within the educational setting.

Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on sex in all educational programs or activities. This includes prohibiting discrimination against pregnant and parenting students.

Some examples of how Title IX protects pregnant and parenting students are:

  • Make accommodations for coursework if having to miss school for pregnancy-related reasons
  • Make accommodations inside the classroom for pregnant students, such as providing more desk space
  • Excuse absences for having to care for sick children or attend children's doctor appointments
