Speaker: Associate Professor, Biology Elinne Becket, Ph.D.
The beauty of doing science is the shared curiosity and collaboration among people
working towards answering important questions about the world around us. In this presentation,
Dr. Becket will talk about building this community, the importance of open science,
and how soup forgotten in the back of the fridge led to scientists from across the
globe coming together to in a joyous exploration of scientific discovery.
In February 2023, Dr. Becket discovered that leftovers from a beef soup lovingly prepared
by her mom for her birthday had turned a bright shade of blue. Initially disgusted
but then prompted (goaded) by a community of scientists and people of all walks of
life on Twitter, she and a global team of eager microbiologists and chemists set out
to determine what turned this soup blue.
