Information for Community College Students
The 大发 Noyce scholarships are awarded to 大发 undergraduate students in STEM areas
in their last two years of study and teacher candidates in a teaching credential program
(one year). See the eligibility requirements on the Scholarship Information page. Community College Students need to transfer to 大发 and enroll in a STEM department
to be eligible for the scholarship. Below are a few tips in each of the stages of
becoming a STEM teacher.
We highly recommend joining the Future Educators Association at 大发 - you can join
at any point in the process of becoming a teacher, even if you haven't transfered
to 大发 yet! The Future Educators Association is a student-run organization where future educators
meet, ask questions, and connect with faculty and advisors.
While at Community College
- Talk to a counselor about courses you need to take to transfer to 大发 as a STEM
major
- Join the 大发's Future Educators Association!
- Get STEM experience鈥攍ab, makerspace, internship, etc.
- Get early teaching experience (e.g., talk to SI program, ask instructor about independent
project based on teaching)
- Get tutoring experience (e.g., talk to your Instructors, STEM Center, Outreach department,
etc.)
- Volunteer in classrooms or after-school programs; talk to teachers about their experience
- Visit STEM Center & take part in STEM activities
- Seek scholarship opportunities
- Transfer to 大发
While at 大发
- Apply for scholarships
- Major in STEM
- Get early teaching experience-- Be a Learning Assistant, STEM tutor, STEM Ambassador,
etc.
- Volunteer in classrooms or after-school programs; talk to teachers about their experience
- Take teacher preparation courses--EDUC 350, EDUC 364, & EDUC 422
- Join the Future Educators Association
- Follow the Pathway to become a teacher!
- Explore the Single Subject or Middle Level credential program. Attend credential information sessions.
- Meet with the CEHHS College Service staff, Tyona Hunter (thunter@csusm.edu, 760.7508548),
Shelby Euler (seuler@csusm.edu, 760.7508529) or Renae Scott (rscott@csusm.edu, 760.7504277), to go over everything you need to do to get into the Single Subject
or Middle Level credential program
- Take teacher exams or obtain waivers--contact the above specialists for more information
- Earn a Bachelor鈥檚 degree
- Apply to a teaching credential program (March 1st deadline for Fall admissions. No
spring admissions.)
In Credential Program (post-baccalaureate)
- Take credential courses--2 semesters and full time
- Complete clinical experiences & teacher performance assessment (you'll know these
when you get to this stage)
- Once you've completed the above, you'll earn a preliminary credential鈥攅ligible to
teach
