Internships

The Environmental Studies Program offers students the opportunity to earn college credit while exploring career opportunities through internships. Internships are usually 3 units and up to 6 units may count towards the program鈥檚 B.A. degree.  Students may also use the internship as part of the Sustainability Minor.

Most internships require advance planning of about one semester to ascertain and/or apply for the required approvals. It is critical that students meet with the program director well in advance of starting an internship to receive academic credit. Students who decide to try to do one in the current semester or undertake one without the proper paperwork may not receive academic credit.

The University Writing Requirement mandates each student write 2500 words in each three-unit course. To meet this requirement, students will be asked to write three self-reflection essays about their time with the organization (1. pre-reflection, 2. during service period, and 3. after completing service). Each assignment should be between 800-1000 words.

Internship credit is not granted retroactively.

Students may earn credit for internships provided that they involve approximately 100-130 hours (about 6-8 hours a week). The internships may happen during the Fall, Spring or Summer.
