Master of Science in Kinesiology
The Master of Science in Kinesiology is designed to provide students with an advanced,
comprehensive study of human movement. Characterized by innovative pedagogy and hands-on
laboratory experiences that build upon undergraduate concepts, the program requires
that all students complete a culminating experience that can be an original research
thesis or project.
Faculty in the Department of Kinesiology are innovative, productive scholars dedicated
to student-centered instruction. The department鈥檚 state-of-the-art laboratories house
the latest in equipment and measurement devices used in the study of movement and
exercise science. Overall, this program will produce graduates who are independent
learners prepared to initiate doctoral study, seek careers in health care or health
and fitness, and become leaders in promoting health and movement related growth in
the North San Diego County region.

- To prepare students for leadership positions in fields related to human movement.
- To provide an environment where, working with faculty, students can demonstrate mastery
by performing research and scholarly activity of sufficient quality for archival publication.
Program Details
- Cohort format with small class sizes
- Full-time, 36-unit program to be completed over 2 years (summer term not included)
- In-person courses
- Close interaction with department faculty
- Program culminates in a thesis, or project reporting results of independent research
Program Goals
- Understand the roles of exercise and physical activity to reduce the onset and severity
of chronic disease through examination or evidence-based content.
- Design, acquire, and disseminate results as demonstrated by successful completion
of a Thesis or project.
- Understand human movement and its relation to health and physical activity.
- Demonstrate and master applied laboratory and measurement skills commonly used in
Kinesiology.
- Demonstrate proficiency in public speaking, data analysis, and scientific writing.
- Upon program completion graduates will be prepared to enter careers requiring a Master鈥檚
Degree including worksite health promotion, clinical exercise physiology, cardiac
rehabilitation, commercial fitness, public/private or non-profit health agencies,
chronic disease prevention in community settings, teaching/coaching at the community
college level.
- Upon program completion, graduates will be prepared to initiate doctoral study in
Allied Health (e.g. Physical Therapy), Exercise Physiology, Motor Control, Biomechanics,
or other related fields.
