Student Assistant Positions
As a student assistant, students are able to build their portfolios and gain valuable
hands-on work experiences that can be readily transferable to Public Relations/Advertising
Agencies, Corporate Marketing Departments or Freelance/Consulting Opportunities.
Writing/Social Media Student Assistant
The University Communications editorial team is looking for a student writing intern/assistant
for the fall 2025 semester. The ideal candidate will spend the 2025-26 academic year
working with the department's lead student writing assistant and the interim assistant
director of editorial and external affairs.
This position is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to hone their writing, interviewing
and research skills and will particularly benefit those looking to learn more about
communications, journalism, marketing and public relations. In this role, you will
write editorial stories, press releases and news briefs; curate social media posts
for the @csusmnews Instagram; and provide general communications support.
The communications writing assistant position is open for a maximum of 20 hours per
week over four days (Monday-Thursday) and requires being able to work in person at
the University Communications office in the Administrative Building. University Communications
will schedule work hours to ensure that there are no conflicts with the student’s
class schedule.
Position requirements:
- Must be a current student and continuously enrolled during the academic year. Undergraduate
students (including credential students) must be continuously enrolled for a minimum
of 6 units. Graduate students must be continuously enrolled for a minimum of 4 graduate
level units.
- Must be available to work all shifts in person at University Communications’ office
in Administrative Building.
- Strong written communication skills.
- Ability to learn and follow Associated Press style and guidelines.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Write editorial content for NewsCenter stories, news briefs and press releases.
- Assist with marketing messaging for promotional campaigns like Cougar Blue Day, ´ó·¢
Giving Day, Super STEM Saturday and other university events and outreach efforts.
- Curate content and assist communications specialist for the @csusmnews Instragram
account, providing timely and engaging posts.
- Assist with copy editing as needed.
- Support the editorial team with emerging projects and tasks.
- Provide backend support of operating systems – including PressPage, Dynamics and OU
Campus – to post/publish information for the ´ó·¢ website and digital signage.
- Provide editorial support for Steps magazine.
- Provide general communications support as directed by the interim assistant director
of public affairs and operations.
Knowledge, skills and abilities required:
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to learn and follow Associated Press style.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office 365, including Word, Outlook and SharePoint.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be able to prioritize workload and work with multiple interruptions.
- Effective problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to adapt and learn quickly.
- Must be tactful, responsible and possess the ability to communicate with individuals
at all levels of the organization.
Hourly rate: $16.50/hour

Graphic Design Student Assistant
- Candidates are likely interested in career fields of print production, web design,
photography or digital illustration.
- Assist in the layout of print collateral like brochures, flyers, invitations and ads,
as well as some web page layouts and HTML emails for various departments across campus.
- Maintain accurate and current brand template guidelines with consistency while producing
fast-paced and high volume projects.
- Collaborate with whole Office of Communications team. Report to Creative Director
regarding production schedule.
- File Management: Ensure organized template edits, artwork layer structure, photo,
vector and font assets in order to easily share with other team members.
Skills/Qualifications: strong understanding of print processes, including layouts, edits, photography, typography,
and prepress file prep, as well as some photography retouching/editing (clipping,
color-correction, manipulation and enhancements).
Experience in designing web pages within the style guidelines of a content management
system.
Must be able to work in-office for a minimum of 10 hours and not exceeding 20 hours
a week. Proficient knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (CS5 or higher); Photoshop, InDesign,
Illustrator, Bridge and Acrobat Pro, as well as Microsoft Office. Familiarity with
both Mac OS and PC/Windows platforms.
