Educators for Change: Maintaining Social Consiousness

鈥淓ducation either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate integration of the younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring about conformity or it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world.鈥

Theme information

Inspired by the recent political climate, this year's theme centers one of the countless topics surrounding education: The ongoing debates and leglislative action surrounding censorship, politics and conformity, and attacks on socially conscious and inclusive education. Educators, students, and leaders will gather to discuss how they empower their community with education that combats social order and promote relevant education that takes into account local traditions and institutions, unique cultures, belief systems, and the needs of the community.

Assess:

  1. How the education system has been historically undermined.
  2. How education is a practice of freedom and a practice of social order.
  3. Critical and relevant curriculum and practices.
  4. Education equality and how it's impacted by racism and classism.

Explore:

  1. Why do we need to be educated and with what curriculum?
  2. How to empower students in and outside the classroom.
  3. Planning and implementing educational programs built on community engagement, critical thinking, and/or cultural relevancy.
  4. The meaning and influence of anti-intellectualism and its consequences.
  5. The material impact of social order on teachers and students.

Connect:

  1. The link between education/social consciousness, empathy, and liberation.
  2. Activism, community building, and education.
