Activities

Our activities emphasize learning quantitative and computational skills, prepare you for success in college, and assist with your application to an advanced honors program in your third and fourth years after BEARS.

Quantitative & Computational Skills

Your first summer you will learn computational and mathematical skills that will prepare you for your introductory biology and chemistry classes

Your second summer you will learn quantitative skills dedicated for statistics, cell biology, physiology and genetics

Your second academic year you will learn dedicated software for statistics, plotting and data analysis

Mentoring, Tutoring & Survival Skills​

You will have mentoring available from the BEARS leaders, research faculty, and other STEM students.

We will connect you with tutoring services available for calculus-based courses, chemistry and biology.

You will participate in seminars to help you improve stress management, interviewing, oral and writing skills.

Community Building & Cultural Validation

Socialize and network with other students interested in research and biomedical science.

Attend career, research and skill seminars led by underrepresented role models.

Learn to think like a scientist and increase academic confidence

Activity Examples

Summer 1

(This is before your first semester!)

Scholars will be paid ($2,000) for their participation in a summer bridge program prior to their first fall that includes guided orientation and enrollment support, student success training and a quantitative and computational skills workshop

First Year

  • Scholars will be paid ($10,000) to attend workshops, seminars, and social events aimed at building STEM community and academic and research skills, $500 is available to support travel to research conferences
  • Meet regularly with faculty and peer mentors, receive tutoring support
  • Quantitative and Computational Workshops I & II
  • ​Tutoring and Cohort Support in Core Foundational Classes.

Second Year

  • Scholars will be paid ($10,000) to attend workshops, seminars, and social events aimed at building STEM community and academic and research skills
  • Quantitative and Computational Workshops III
  • Meet regularly with faculty and peer mentors, receive tutoring support
  • We help you apply to advanced honors ´ó·¢ Programs such as U-RISE, McNair, LSAMP, Beckman, CIRM
