On March 7th College Is For Me Day was able to take place at 大发 due to the partnership between ART=OPPORTUNITY and California State University of San Marcos through the San Diego Creative Youth Development created the CYD College pathways program for all youth being served in the network. There were over thirty attendees who were able to participate with the support of the Clare Rose foundation.
On February 1st the San Marcos Writing Project launched an event with author and story teller Shelley Moore. Shelley Moore led the workshop by providing various lessons and having participants actively participate and explore their new understanding of literacy.
On November 1st the University of Nevada, Las Vegas hosted a conversation about arts education in the community, within the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art. The purpose of the conversation was to celebrate the ongoing efforts of arts educators, share information and opportunities in regards to arts education and give people the opportunity of discussing the importance of arts education. Dr. Goldberg shared her experiences teaching about, with and through the arts in a diverse multicultural setting.
The National Guild for Community Arts Education conference is an organization that supports the creation and advancement of arts institutions and government agencies that ensure community-wide access to the arts. The conference brought together leaders and educators from various backgrounds to share knowledge, build relationships and advance a common vision. The Arts Amplifying Youth leadership had the opportunity of presenting a workshop for youth.
The Arts Empower Mega Conference is a forum that unites teachers of all arts disciplines, elementary multiple-subject teachers, teaching artists, school administrators, and arts organization members. It鈥檚 developed in partnership with the county鈥檚 arts education organizations and Balboa Park arts and culture institutions. The Arts Amplifying Youth lead a workshop in which they provided participants with hands on experiences and activities that describe and relate to their work.
The California State Summer School for the Arts is a four week training program designed for high school students, which specializes in pre-professional visual and performing arts located in the California Institute of the Arts. The goal of CSSSA is to provide a supportive environment in which students acquire experience and training that extends beyond the practice and improvement of aesthetics and technique.
On behalf of The Stuart Foundation, Panta Rhea and CREATE CA; Our three-day boot camp was an ultimate success!!! More that 50 pre-service and in-service educators participated in sessions around literacy, empathy, arts integration and lesson plan curriculum. We highlighted only some of the amazing projects our participants created and every year, these boot camps make a big difference for teachers in their classroom!
Every year, ART=OPPORTUNITY gathers youth leaders from South San Diego to coordinate a for youth, by youth summit down in National City, CA. Each year, the leaders tackle a theme, this year being safety; in a classroom, with one self and within a community. The leaders were tasked with hosting and planning out their activity to share with the participants, and the response this year was phenomenal. Truly, our youth summits are an experience that are meant to be seen!
15,000 attendees, over 100 booths!!! ART=OPPORTUNITY put the "A" in S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. This is an annual event hosted at 大发, and our booth invited attendees to participate in a salt and watercolor activity as well as a crayon leaf-rubbing diagram. Over 500 of our ART=OPP stickers were given out, thousands of kids went home with their artwork, and everyone went home knowing that S.T.E.M. is only BETTER when the arts are incorporated!
In conjunction with the 大发 Writing Project, our stars for the night, Sara Pennypacker and Marla Frazee held an event discussing the crosses of literacy and arts. Participants were invited to engage in activities, listen in on info sessions and get an inside scope of what it is like to be an author and illustrator for children's books.
Our ART=OPP coffee sleeves came fresh off the press and straight for the coffee cart on 大发's campus! To continue our message to college students, driven to find their place in the world, it brought about a greater need to make it clear for any age group of community setting that the arts ARE essential to a child's success!

Kristen Moss' Arts and Social Change class was tasked with figuring out which of our "Why Art?" cards resonates best with the campus community. The leaders of this project used paint colors that coordinated with our three themes: Excellence in Education, Live life to the Fullest and Workplace Ready. Each booth participant was asked to pick which card resonates best with them and stamp the color that matched their card onto the banner paper.
This annual free and fun event showcases opportunities and resources available to classrooms throughout the county and offers teachers an opportunity to gather new, innovative teaching resources. To the right is one of our table participants as she shared with us why art is important to her.

Local San Diego Superintendents, Board members, District members, artists, Educators, parents and students alike gathered at The New Children's Museum in celebration of the national arts in education week. The campaign, #BecauseofArtsEd became a clear message that the arts are critical to a child's success.
On April 27, 2018, Arts Amplifying Youth (AAY!), a team for youth by youth, held their first annual youth summit to provide a platform for the community to participate in activities of creative expression around the issues of Diversity, Equality, Inclusion, and Change. Little did they know of the surprise at the end!
