Crystal Sep煤lveda is a Puerto Rican dance artist. Sep煤lveda artistic research is invested in examining emergent notions of identity, healing, self-determination, and futurity from a Puerto Rican diaspora, post-Hurac谩n Mar铆a, anti-colonial positionality. She generates and composes sound, movement, and video for live performance and installation. Her ongoing performance practices investigate improvisation through instant composition, multi-disciplinary collaboration, solo-durational performance, site-based activations, and writing dance scores. Recent collaborations and choreographed works include Bodyscape (2015), the river knows (2016), Ch鈥檜 Mayaa (2017), Remedios (2019). Becoming a mother to na铆ri azul has inspired works such as Rooting Within (2019) which was commissioned by HomeLA and Fulcrum Arts, and Remedios (2019). Published in WE SPOKE, "mar铆a, na铆ri, and i" and " Instructions Provided by a Mother's Intuition Postpartum" (2019) are writings/dance scores on becoming a mother and desires for a viable world in the face of environmental disasters and injustices.
Sep煤lveda鈥檚 work has been supported by Fulcrum Arts, the Foundation for Contemporary Art, Riverside Art Museum, and the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Her choreographic work has been presented at Whitney Museum of American Art (New York); Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, Highways Performance Space, Human Resources LA, The Women鈥檚 Center for Creative Work (Los Angeles); Center of Music and Audio Technologies (Berkeley); dan莽a em foco Festival International (Rio de Janeiro, BR); Lake Studios Berlin (Berlin, Germany); Centre D眉rrenmatt (Neuch芒tel, Switzerland) and at Mus茅e des beaux-arts (Le Locle, Switzerland). Sep煤lveda has held faculty positions at La Universidad de Sagrado Corazon (Puerto Rico), Mt. San Jacinto College, and the University of California Riverside (UCR). she holds a M.F.A. in Experimental Choreography from UCR.
