A two-day history conference titled "From Baldwins to Boomers" was held March 3 and 4 in the Clarke Field House, sponsored by the Congress of History of San Diego and Imperial Counties, the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Association, and ... the Cal State San Marcos history department. The title refers to Baldwin steam locomotives and "boomers" who promoted the development of towns in the late 19th century. The organizers said the Friday and Saturday conference marked the one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary of the late 19th-century railway and real estate boom in San Diego County.
The conference included illustrated talks, displays, and local history society presentations.
Prof. Jeff Charles explained that the Congress of History is an "umbrella organization" for local history societies. He told a reporter for the The Pride that the conference offered a perspective on the county's past. "Many students don't realize how deeply their own lives are shaped by the history of local development," he said.
