Graduates, guests, alumni, and faculty crowded into the Old Library Courtyard May 13 for the annual history department reception for graduates, and to honor the 2005 alumnus of the year, Jason Hinkle. Prof. Jill Watts introduced the award winner and provided the program notes:
"Jason Hinkle transferred to California State University, San Marcos in Fall of 1996 where he graduated first with a Bachelor鈥檚 Degree in History (and a minor in Film Studies) and then went on to earn another BA in Visual and Performing Arts and an MFA in Film. Diagnosed at age sixteen with the neuromuscular disease Fredericks Ataxia, he has emerged as a vigorous advocate for disability rights.
"A long time volunteer with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Jason has made a number of appearances on Jerry Lewis鈥 Labor Day Telethon to raise funds for medical research, participated in several community projects, including outdoors camps, targeted at supporting adults and children with disabilities, and often speaks to community groups on disability rights. He was recently awarded California Muscular Dystrophy鈥檚 Personal Achievement Award.
"His documentary film, 'My Life,' is an autobiographical exploration of his life experiences that serves to educate the public on Fredericks Ataxia and the situations faced by Americans with disabilities. 'My Life' has garnered two film awards and was recently exhibited at Weber State University鈥檚 annual film festival in Odgen, Utah."
