Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), also known as the Buckley Amendment, is a federal law that regulates the privacy of student records.  FERPA applies to all educational institutions that receive Department of Education funds, and, thus, applies to public and private colleges and universities alike.

FERPA delineates rights and responsibilities of students and universities regarding student records.  Rights assigned to parents in K-12 education transition to students once students enroll in higher education, regardless of the student鈥檚 age.

Students have the right to access their educational records, to request their records be amended, and to exercise specific types of control over the disclosure of their records to third parties.  Please see the page entitled, 鈥淪tudent Rights鈥� for more detailed information.
